What is the Broadway to Canal Link project?
The Broadway to Canal Link project will upgrade the existing off-road walking and cycling route connecting Chadderton and Middleton. The scheme aims to provide a safer, more attractive and accessible route linking to Broadway, the Rochdale Canal and nearby schools, workplaces and communities.
Why is this project needed?
Currently, options for walking and cycling between Chadderton and Middleton are limited or involve busy roads. This project will make it easier and safer for people to travel on foot or by bike, helping to reduce congestion, improve air quality, and support more sustainable travel choices.
What improvements are planned?
The proposed improvements include:
How is the project being funded?
Funding has been secured through the Department for Transport’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS), allocated to Oldham Council specifically for this project. This means the funding cannot be used for other works or services.
Who will benefit from the scheme?
The route will benefit residents, commuters, school pupils, parents and carers, people with disabilities, and anyone who enjoys walking or cycling for leisure or travel. It will also support local businesses and schools by improving access and reducing local traffic.
Will the route be accessible for everyone?
Yes. Accessibility is a key priority. The design will follow TfGM’s Bee Network standards and DfT Inclusive Mobility guidance, ensuring the route is step-free, well-lit, and suitable for people with limited mobility, wheelchair users, families with prams, and others.
