Nature is a key part of creating beautiful places and the green and blue infrastructure networks are essential for retaining and enhancing these natural features. The natural environment enhances the biodiversity of the local area and functions as a key defence against noise pollution, low air quality and to flood risk, all of which contribute towards tackling the climate emergency.

The Draft SPD seeks to retain key assets, restore and enhance existing habitats and create new ones of value. The masterplan also introduces public open spaces for the community to enjoy that are built with a sustainable drainage (SuDS) network that efficiently drains the development by managing water on site, before safely discharging it at agreed greenfield run-off rates to the surrounding network of watercourses.

This chapter of the Draft SPD includes information on:

  • The provision of green infrastructure and open space;

  • How development will integrate with the surrounding Green Belt;

  • Blue infrastructure, including the incorporation of wetland areas and sustainable drainage; and

  • Delivery of biodiversity net gain.
