What is the St Mary’s Way Streets for All project?

    The St Mary's Way Streets for All project aims to transform this town centre road into a pedestrian, cycling and eco-friendly area and entrance to the town centre. The project aims to improve accessibility, improve and enhance green spaces, and promote active travel options.

    What are the main objectives of the project?

    The project aims to make St Mary's Way more accessible by reshaping the highway link to provide better connectivity for public transport, pedestrians and cyclists. It also seeks to create high-quality public realm and enhance the overall environment of the area.

    How will the project be funded?

    Grant funding for the project is provided by the Department for Transport’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS). This funding has been secured by Oldham Council for this project and can’t be spent on other areas of work.

    What specific improvements are planned for St Mary's Way?

    The project will involve making the road greener by planting trees and shrubs, creating dedicated space for walking and cycling, improving pedestrian paths, and enhancing bus stop facilities. Additionally, a two-way cycle track with priority over side roads will be installed.

    How will the project enhance connectivity and accessibility?

    The improvements to St Mary’s Way are part of a wider vision to make the town centre easier to navigate, known as the ‘Accessible Oldham’ programme. There are lots of elements of Accessible Oldham that have already been delivered including improvements at Henshaw Street, Albion Street, West Street and Cheapside and lots more is being developed to make sure the whole of the town centre is attractive and accessible.

    The St Marys Way project will provide better transport options to and from the north of the town centre and will prepare the area for the development of the new town centre park and housing.
