Proposed Approach

Image of Castleshaw Valley, Oldham

We're committed to preserving and enhancing the unique natural landscapes that define our community.

These policies, ranging from considerations for the Peak District National Park to safeguarding Oldham's Green Belt and promoting dark skies and tranquillity, underpin our dedication to balancing development with the preservation of our precious natural resources.

The policies listed below are designed to support the natural environment and open land in Oldham. A brief summary of them is given under each heading.

  • Policy OL1: Consideration for the Peak District National Park:
    • This policy acknowledges the proximity and importance of the Peak District National Park to Oldham, emphasising the need for development to consider and respect the park's distinctive character.
  • Policy OL2: Protecting and Enhancing Oldham's Green Belt:
    • Recognising the vital role of Green Belt areas in preserving the character and identity of Oldham, this policy is dedicated to safeguarding and enhancing these valuable spaces. By imposing strict controls on inappropriate development within the Green Belt, we aim to protect the natural beauty, biodiversity, and recreational opportunities that these areas afford to our community..
  • Policy OL3: Extensions and Alterations to Existing Buildings within the Green Belt:
    • Balancing the need for development with the preservation of the Green Belt, this policy provides guidelines for extensions and alterations to existing buildings within these protected areas. By carefully managing changes to built structures, we aim to ensure that any development respects and complements the surrounding natural environment, maintaining the integrity of the Green Belt.
  • Policy OL4: Local Green Space:
    • This policy highlights the importance of protecting Local Green Spaces—areas with special significance to the local community. By providing safeguards for these areas, we aim to preserve their value and foster a sense of local identity and well-being.
  • Policy OL5: Protecting Dark Skies and Tranquillity:
    • In recognition of the cultural and environmental importance of dark skies and tranquillity, this policy seeks to limit light pollution and disturbances that may compromise these qualities. By promoting responsible lighting and development practices, we aim to protect the nocturnal environment and preserve areas of tranquillity, contributing to the overall well-being of our residents.
